紹介が遅くなりましたが昨年11月、バリにいるクリストファーからメールが来ました。バリでも新しいドラムに出会い、自分のものにしようと一生懸命勉強して楽しんでいるようです。

Hello Uriparum!

Thank you very much for the wonderful send-off party and for singing to me before my departure. I love the sogo, for Japanese practice as much as for playing.

I have been enjoying my stay in Bali. My favorite thing to see is the Kecak dance. 20 men chant about seven rhythms at the same time. It's an incredible carpet of rhythm. I have been able to write down some of the rhythms and plan to use them in my drumming.

Accompanying the gamelan is a drum called kundang. It has two sides, one of them played with a stick. The rhythms are all improvised to match the gamelan. The most interesting part is that two drummers sit on opposite sides of the stage and play a rhythm in stereo. So one would play the gu of gugun the other would play the gun. It's like listening to a tennis match. I am planning to study this drum style for about a week and then head up to Bangkok to study the thon-rammana drum style.

ウリパラムの皆さん！

出発前、私の為に歌ってくれた素晴らしい送別会本当にありがとうございました。また演奏するのと同じくらい日本語の練習の為にもプレゼントのソゴ大切にしてます。

バリでの滞在楽しんでます。ケチャックダンス見るの、とても好きです。２０人が約７リズムを同時に単調に歌います。ものすごいリズムの嵐です。ある程度のリズムを書き取る事が出来るので、それらを私の叩き方に取り入れようと思ってます。

ガムランと一緒に伴奏してるのはクンダンと呼ばれる太鼓です。両面持っていて、片方はバチを持って演奏します。そのリズムはガムランに合わせるため全て即興です。とても面白い所は、２人の鼓手がステージの両サイドに座ってリズムを追っかけながら演奏します。つまり、一人がググンのグを叩いたら、もう片方がグンを叩く、と。テニスの試合を見てる（聞いてる）ようです。私は約１週間この太鼓のスタイルを勉強するつもりです。そしてソンーラマンナドラムを勉強しにバンコクへ向かいます。
